The Last Session Before Leaving Home


Some sessions stay with you long after you’ve packed your gear, and this was one of them. Ethan and Nyah’s sunset engagement session on Nyah’s family land in Pennsylvania was my final shoot before moving across the country, and somehow it felt like everything had come full circle.

My husband and I first met Ethan and Nyah at Penn State. They were our first double date, two couples sitting around a table, talking about how quickly time would pass and how one day we’d all be married. Back then, it felt like a dream far off in the distance. Now their wedding is just around the corner!

As the sun dipped behind the trees, the evening felt quiet and familiar. Ethan, who later became my husband’s college roommate, laughed easily with Nyah. The light was soft, the air warm, and everything about it reminded me why I fell in love with photography: the connection, the storytelling, and the privilege of witnessing love in all its small, ordinary moments.

Leaving Pennsylvania after this session was bittersweet. It is where my photography began, where I learned to see beauty in the simple and the unposed. Now, living in Oklahoma and photographing weddings across the country, this evening still feels like a marker in time. A reminder that the best stories are the ones we get to live alongside the people who helped shape them.

Soon, I’ll be flying back to photograph their wedding, another full-circle moment that I already know will mean more than words can describe.
